Freshmen Application Checklist

1. Check Admissions Requirements

With a 50% acceptance rate, FIU is considered a "selective" university – especially during the Fall semester. Don't panic, though: throughout the year, FIU admits many students to alternate pathways that put them in the best position to succeed.

We base our admissions on a sliding scale that takes GPA and test scores into account. While there isn't a "typical" FIU student, the following are average scores for students admitted during the 2016-2017 academic year:

GPA - 3.8 (weighted)
SAT - 1619
ACT – 24

2. Apply

The online application takes about 20-30 minutes to complete and will require a $30 application fee. When you begin the online application, be prepared to pay this fee or request an application fee waiver from your current school.

3. Submit Documents

Even if you have completed the application, you will not be considered for admission until you have submitted all your documents. All documents must be submitted before the deadline to qualify for admission. As a freshman, you'll need the following:

Official high school transcripts - Visit Undergraduate Admissions for how to submit transcripts.
Official SAT/ACT scores - Official scores for the SAT (code: 5206) or ACT (code: 0776) are sent directly from collegeboard.org or actstudent.org (Students should take the SAT and/or ACT in their junior year, but no later than fall of senior year.)
Residency documentation - Residency status is used primarily to determine whether students pay in-state or out-of-state tuition. Whether you are claiming Florida residency or are an out-of-state or international student, you are required to submit proof of residency. Learn how to establish residency.

4. Check Admission Status

When you finish your application, you will be assigned a Panther ID and within 1-3 days you will have access to your MyFIU account where you can check your application status.

If you receive your acceptance letter, congratulations! You're on your way. Confirm your acceptance and start the admitted student process to enroll in FIU.

If your application is deferred or denied, all hope is not lost. There are many paths to FIU:

Alternate pathways – This isn’t a rejection. It just means that your preferred pathway may have met its capacity. Check the requirements for alternate pathways to see which one you qualify for best. This is also a chance to improve your SAT/ACT scores or add any dual enrollment credits you may have left out of your application. Update your application for the next semester, and you'll increase your chances of getting in.
Admissions appeal – In some cases, students who have been deferred or denied admissions may submit an appeal. The admissions committee will require additional information to review your appeal.
Connect4Success - Start your college education off at a participating Florida community college (with bonus FIU perks). On completion of an Associate in Arts (AA), you'll qualify for automatic admission and a smoother transfer to FIU.
