GLY 5931 Graduate Seminar (1).

Presentation or critical examination of

current research problems in geology.

A selection of topics is considered each

term. Topics may also include

individual research in the student's

field of investigation. Prerequisite:

Graduate standing or Permission of the

GLY 6931 Advanced Graduate

Seminar (1). Oral presentation and

discussion by students of an assigned

literature survey, with reports by

members of the seminar. Prerequisite:

GLY 5931 or permission of the

Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide exposure to and experience in scientific presentation.

Performance Measures

Attendance: Up to 2 pre-arranged absences acceptable

Presentation: You will be expected to give one presentation of approximately 20 minutes duration and answer audience questions. Students who signed up for GLY 6931 are encouraged to give one hour seminar including answering questions. You will select the topic, keeping in mind the overall earth science theme of the seminar series. You will provide the title of the talk one week in advance of your presentation and an abstract 48 hours before your scheduled talk. Please indicate if you have a strong preference for either of the assignments dates listed above. If necessary, I will assign your presentation date. You will be graded on your promptness in responding to the deadlines, the quality of your presentation materials, and your presentation itself. Some specific items that will be considered include:

• Rapport with audience. Do you face the audience frequently or lecture to the screen?
• Preparation: Are your slides of professional quality, legible, and free of errors in units and spelling, for example?
• Speech: Can you be heard clearly? Do you speak at a reasonable rate?

Grading/Attendance Standards

A professional quality presentation, perfect attendance, and adherence to deadlines will merit a letter grade A. The most common reason for a B grade is missing deadlines. An obvious lack of preparation for your presentation or poor attendance will earn you a C. You are expected to attend all departmental seminars held during the regular seminar time this semester, including those that have not yet been scheduled.
