History

The honor society began as the Civil Engineering Honor Society (CEHS) in March 1993, with the particular goal to become a chapter of Chi Epsilon.  CEHS was an active club that established some traditions in the department.  Some of the favorites were the fundraising events as well as the luncheons, which became a social event for the department faculty, staff, and students.  The trademark food was the Cuban Imperial Rice, which was wildly popular.  Other activities had included department annual picnics and invited guest speakers.

The Chi Epsilon FIU Chapter was founded on April 9, 1998.  Fifty one people became charter members.  Dr. Leroy Thompson became the first Chapter Honor Member.  Now the chapter boast a membership of 154, with most of its members having become productive practicing engineers, who work all over the nation.

The National Chi Epsilon Chapter had been founded in 1922 at the University of Illinois.  It now has over 88 thousand members nationally.  For a brief overview of its history click here.
