Interns: Spring 2005 | Fall 2006 |

A limited number of internship placements are available each semester to WS majors and certificate earners. If you are interested in an internship, it is a good idea to start arranging your placement the semester BEFORE you want to take the internship. The process often takes several weeks and only students who have a definite placement will be able to register. We want to make sure we have a placement arranged for you before you register so students are not in the situation of having paid for the course but not having a placement.

Eligibility | Selecting a Site | Intern Agreement | Intern Evaluation

Eligibility Criteria and Application Procedures for the Internship

  1. Have taken 3 WS courses before your placement begins.
  2. Be earning a Women's Studies major or undergraduate certificate.
  3. Email a resume to the Internship Director, srose@fiu.edu
  4. Select 3 internship site possibilities from the proposed list (or propose your own site).
  5. Meet with the Internship Director for a brief interview if you have not met her before. You can schedule an appointment by calling Wilma Dagdag at 305/348-2408.
  6. We will check with the internship sites you've chosen to see if they are accepting students.
  7. You will interview with the internship site and see if a mutually acceptable placement can be arranged.
  8. Once the above steps have happened, you will be given a special permission form to register for the course.

How the internship works:

  1. Below is a partial listing of some places that are interested in having WS interns from FIU. You also can propose an internship at a site not on the list if you have someplace you would like to work.
  2. Also attached is a form describing the setup for the internship in terms of the different parties' responsibilities. You would be expected to spend 8 hours per week at the internship for 15 weeks (including spring break week unless excused by site supervisor). Most sites expect you to be there during daytime hours.
  3. At the end of the semester, the site supervisor fills out and returns an evaluation form to the FIU internship director.
  4. In addition, interns will meet with the WS Internship Director on Mondays, 3:30-4:45pm. The academic component of the course will include some readings, an academic assignment, the development of a portfolio of your academic work and experience (intended to help you with the job search once you graduate), and a presentation about your internship experience.

Selecting an Internship Site

The list of contacts below will assist you in finding an internship placement. It is essential to begin searching for an internship prior to the semester in which you plan to do the internship. Once you select 2 or 3 sites that interest you, the WS internship director will contact the site to make sure it is accepting placements. Then we will help you arrange an interview. You are responsible for making arrangements with the internship site as to the hours you will work and understanding their expectations as well as the requirements for earning academic credit in Women's Studies.

As you are selecting an internship, it is a good idea to discuss your plans with an advisor in Women's Studies. You are encouraged to do your own homework by investigating websites and initiating contact with persons listed below. Be sure to take into consideration your interests and career plans, enthusiasm for a particular area of work, ability to commit to a schedule, and access to transportation.

Questions to ask internship providers:

  • What kind of schedule is available? Are hours flexible? Will you be working most of your hours on-site or independently? Will you be expected to participate in special events outside the regular schedule?
  • What particular tasks do their interns do? What kind of training and supervision is involved? What kinds of skills will you have an opportunity to develop?
  • Are there possibilities for future employment at this particular organization? in the field more generally?

Additional internships may become available in the future. If you have a particular area in which you would like to work, and you do not see the area or organization listed below, please make an appointment to discuss the option with the director of Women's Studies, Dr. Suzanna Rose.
