An Indian Jain Nun

Samaniji Charitra Prajna is a Jaina nun. Jainism is a minority religion in India propounded in the sixth century BCE by Mahavira, an elder contemporary of the Buddha. Mahavira introduced the virtue of non-violence or ahimsa into Indian culture. After Mahavira, religious leaders from the Buddha to Mahatma Gandhi have adopted and adapted this emphasis on non-violence.

Prajna is in the staff of Jain Vishva Bharati Institute in Rajasthan, India, from which she received her M.A. in Jainism and comparative religion and philosophy in 1991. She earned a B.A. in English at University of Ajmer, also in Rajasthan, in 1980. She is highly regarded as a spiritual teacher and meditation master as well as an academic, and has lectured widely in India, England, and the United States.
Prajna is a Visiting Professor of Religious Studies at FIU for the fall semester, where she is teaching courses on Jainism and non-violence. Her term at FIU is sponsored by South Florida’s Jaina community and is coordinated by FIU’s Center for the Study of Spirituality.

WOMEN OF DISTINCTION SERIES
A Room of One's Own

Conversation with Featured Artists:
Teresita Fernández, María Elena González,
Quisqueya Henríquez and María Martínez-Cañas.

Moderated by Eleanor Heartney, Art Critic.

An internationally published art critic, a contributing writer to Art in America , and the author of Critical Condition: American Culture at the Crossroads and Postmoderne, Heartney will guide the discussion and help to place these artists and their respective installations within the framework of contemporary art history. This thought-provoking panel discussion will loosely stem from the curatorial focus and the reference to Virginia Woolf 's seminal text addressing the two major factors fundamental for women to create their work: space and money. An open forum of intellectual debate will be encouraged to take place amongst the moderator, the artists and the audience.

Jane WTO: Women and Civil Disobedience

Beverly Yuen Thompson, Ph.D.
Postdoctoral Fellow
Women's Studies, FIU

In Seattle, during the World Trade Organization Ministerial, 50,000 people gathered in the streets to stand against corporate globalization and send a new message to the public—fair trade. Of these, over 500 people were arrested after the city enacted Martial Law and declared downtown a “no-protest zone.” These arrestees continued their resistance inside the jails, refusing to provide their names, and therefore were called Jane and John WTO on their jail bracelets. This lecture discusses the role of women in civil disobedience actions, particularly this “jail solidarity,” or resistance behind bars during the Global Justice demonstrations in the United States. It also discusses the history of women’s participation in high-risk direct action in such movements as labor, Civil Rights, and anti-nuclear. Women have always been involved in direct action social movements, and this lecture brings their participation to the forefront.
