QBIC Call for Applications

 

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY’s new integrative undergraduate QBIC Program (QUANTIFYING BIOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM) has received $1.2 million dollars from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and has openings for 48 incoming freshmen for the Fall of 2008.  QBIC seeks entering freshmen with strong analytical skills who wish to major in Biology and at the same time, increase the likelihood of gaining entrance into top graduate programs in the biological sciences or medical schools.

QBIC OFFERS THE FOLLOWING UNIQUE FEATURES.

 

  1. Science, mathematics, and English course materials have been integrated to provide students with a grasp of how these subjects can be combined to gain a better understanding of how living organisms work and behave, and how this integrated knowledge can be used to develop new concepts in the biological sciences and medicine.

 

  1. During the freshman and sophomore years QBIC scholars will be enrolled in a common set of courses.  In addition, QBIC scholars receive mentoring and advising services specifically tailored for the program.  QBIC’s cohort system fosters a tight social network of engaged students who work and study together toward similar interests and goals.

 

3.      EACH COHORT OF SCHOLARS meets weekly in smaller discussion groups of 8-10 students, to learn how scientists do research. In the last two years, QBIC scholars will actively participate in ongoing research projects within the university.

 

4.   Need-based scholarships are available for the four years of the program.

 

5.   Entering QBIC scholars are given the opportunity to participate in a six-week summer preparatory workshop (June 30th –August 7th, 2008) to smooth the transition into college and prepare for the first year in QBIC.

 

6.   Free tutoring and mentoring services are available for all QBIC scholars.

 

7.   QBIC is funded through Florida International University, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
