SAFE SPACE
SHELTER,

DESCRIPTION: Safespace operates two shelters in Miami-Dade County, which
provide a full range of services to victims of domestic violence and their
dependent children. The main goals of the agency are to provide safety
and an environment that encourages self-sufficiency for its clients, and
to promote in the community the prevention of domestic violence. Both
centers provide crisis intervention, community education, psycho-educational
support groups, individual and group counseling and referral to different
resources in the community. Safespace North is 63-bed facility. One of
its components, the Children's Program, coordinates activities for the
family residing in the shelter.
OPPORTUNITIES: Service-learning opportunities include participation in
the children's program. Opportunities within the children's program include
assistance in the areas of counseling, educational and recreational activities
as well as supportive duties. Also, the program welcomes students' initiatives,
and group or individual projects.
HOURS NEEDED: The program's hours are 2pm - 10pm on weekdays, and 10am
- 6pm on Saturdays.

SHAKE

DESCRIPTION: Uses a sailing as a medium for people with and without disabilities
to get involved with sailing and improve their self-esteem.
OPPORTUNITIES: Serve as a dockhand helping with disabilities on and off
boats. Accompany them on sailing trips.

DESCRIPTION: Provides year-round athletic competition in a variety of
Olympic-style sports for children and adults with mental retardation and
developmental disabilities.
OPPORTUNITIES: Assistance is needed in a variety of areas, including:
Planning and implementing events and competitions, sponsoring fundraising
events. Major events include: Indoor Games (Oct-Nov 2000); Basketball
(Nov-Dec 2000); Summer Games (March 2001); Equestrian (April 2001); Aquatics/Softball
(May 2001)
