MIAMI-DADE ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL DIVISION, 7401 NW 74th St., Miami, FL 33166

DESCRIPTION: The Animal Care and Control Division provides the following services: code enforcement--vaccinations, licenses, loose animals, etc; dead animal pick-up; animal care and pick-up, veterinary care; adoption; dog & cat licensing; community outreach & education (spay/neuter programs, rabies vaccinations, etc.); & euthanasia.
OPPORTUNITIES: Lost & Found: help reunite lost animals with their owners; Dispatch & clerical: assist in receiving and dispatching calls to Animal Control officers in the field, data entry, etc; Animal companion: provide companionship, exercise & grooming to the animals; Kennel aid: assist kennel staff in management of animals in shelter; Front counter: assist public, etc.; Other programs: match-a-pet program, community education, special events/clinic/shelter maintenance.
HOURS NEEDED: Depends on your assignment--many opportunities available Monday-Friday 11am - 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 12 am - 5 p.m.
COMMENTS: The Animal Care and Control Division annually handles more than 23,000 animals. Unfortunately, roughly 18,000 of them must be destroyed. Call Ms. Rodriguez to set up an interview and orientation! She can be hard to reach so keep trying.

MIAMI HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 17661 SW 117th Ave., Miami, FL 33177

DESCRIPTION: This is an elementary school that covers pre-K - 5 grades.
OPPORTUNITIES: Tutor One-on-one with an at-risk child; read stories to children/classes; assist with special events and activities; assist PTA and parent activities; chaperone on field trips; teacher's aides; assist with school-wide activities (Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Week, Drug & Alcohol Awareness, etc.).
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday between 8:45am - 3:30pm (until 2pm on Wednesdays)
COMMENTS: Must commit to at least one hour a week for 12 weeks. Ms. Coffey will place you based on your interests and service-learning assignment. There may be opportunities to attend M-DCPS training workshops. Call and arrange an interview/orientation! We need your help. We look forward to your arrival!

MIAMI JEWISH HOME & HOSPTIAL FO R THE AGED AT DOUGLASS GARDENS, 5200 NE 2 Avenue, Miami, FL

DESCRIPTION: Day care and residential home for the aged. Has 438 residents and 60 adults in day care.
OPPORTUNITIES: Serve as a visitor to the residents. Help with geriatric day care programs. Work with the therapeutic team to transport residents and assist with educational activities.
HOURS NEEDED: M-Sunday, 9:00am-4:30pm.
COMMENTS: Minimum of 20 hours required! Many opportunities.

MIAMI LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE BLIND, 601 SW 8th Ave, Miami, FL 33130

DESCRIPTION: The Lighthouse provides rehabilitative training, computer/vocational training, and social group activities programs to newly blinded and visually impaired persons. Independent living adaptability and adjustment to blindness are the goals.
OPPORTUNITIES: Examples include arts & crafts instruction, dance and exercise, group hobby instruction, and assistance with the reading of correspondence, bills, etc. Instructors also need assistance teaching clients orientation and mobility, personal management, communication (braille, handwriting, using cassettes and phones, etc.).
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday, 8:00 - 5:00
COMMENTS: Service-learning students must commit to at least 3 hours per week and 25 hours per semester. Call for orientation dates and to set an appointment.
