DESCRIPTION: Weed and Seed is an initiative of the U. S, Department of
Justice that focuses on public safety and neighborhood revitalization.
The four-part strategy to accomplish this is comprised of law enforcement,
community policing, prevention/intervention and treatment; and neighborhood
restoration. The Phicol Williams Community Center is a multi-service center
where a variety of youth and adult services are coordinated and a place
where youth and other residents can access needed services, develop relationships,
find opportunities to be productive and successful, and enhance skills.
The Safe Haven serves children ages 6-17 and provides a variety of services
and supportive programs. It is a safe and secure facility located in the
heart of southwest Homestead.
OPPORTUNITIES: Serve as a mentor and tutor; work with 1-3 children in
a group; assist with developing reading and math skills; assist with homework;
play games; and, help children develop self-confidence and self-esteem
by being a positive role model.
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday, 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. You must commit to
at least 4 hours per week.
COMMENTS: Please call for more information. You need a willingness to
work with children whose skills are under-developed, but who are willing
and able to learn, and you need a lot of patience.

DESCRIPTION: Rescue and rehabilitation of abused, abandoned and neglected
horses.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Farm Maintenance - stall cleaning, grounds cleaning.
Fence building, and maintenance. Clerical and computers. Fundraising.
Tabling for community events.
HOURS: 7 days, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. More hours available to volunteers who
become actively involved in HPAF.
COMMENTS: No experience necessary. Volunteers will learn proper daily
maintenance for horses. Extensive learning opportunities for committed
volunteers in natural horsemanship, holistic health care for the horses,
horse cruelty investigations and rehabilitation of malnourished horses.

DESCRIPTION: This therapeutic program allows handicapped children to ride
ponies and horses.
OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers assist children by leading the horses and by
walking along side the horses & children. Activities include exercises,
riding instruction, & games. Training is provided on-site.
HOURS NEEDED: Saturdays, 9am-1pm. Mid September through the end of May.
COMMENTS: Please park in front of property. Note: You must call to register
prior to coming to confirm and RSVP (note--call between 8am & 6pm
only!). Directions: Directions: Take the turnpike south to exit 5, turn
right (north) on Krome (177th Avenue). Take Krome to Von Bauen Dr. (264th
Street). The farm is on the south side of the road before the railroad
tracks. The season is only from the first of September through the first
of June.
