DESCRIPTION: A multi-faceted academic support program that targets the seventh grade cohorts in Madison and Westview Middle Schools. The program will matriculate services for five years as the cohorts progress the grade continuum. The program's goals include gains in math and reading achievement, advanced placement course enrollment, high school graduation and transfer to college.
OPPORTUNITIES: Serve as a tutor and college role model, mentor, and/or college coach. There is also the opportunity to become a paid tutor, mentor or college coach once service-learning hours have been completed.
HOURS NEEDED: Flexible schedules between 7:50am and 4:45pm Monday - Friday; Saturday opportunities as well.
TRAINING: Training sessions are offered at Florida International University, North Campus.

DESCRIPTION: Gold Coast Theater is a professional company promoting European "physical theater" including music, mime, juggling, dance, and visual beauty.
OPPORTUNITIES: Administrative: data entry, school bookings, record keeping (Macintosh); Technical: stage management, lighting, audio, recording of tapes, videotape editing; Production: preparation of masks, costumes, sets, props, etc.
HOURS NEEDED: Mon. - Fri., 1 p.m. - 5pm (flexible); Saturday and Sunday hours are determined by show schedules.
COMMENTS: The Gold Coast Theater has many opportunities for a wide range of students! Call Ms. Parry to set up an orientation and for show schedules. This is a grass-roots organization appropriate for self-starters with a lot of initiative and a genuine interest in theater.

DESCRIPTION: Good Shepherd is a day care center with a capacity of 260 children that was created to meet the day care needs of economically disadvantaged residents of South Dade. The programs emphasize the physical, emotional, mental, and social development of the children.
OPPORTUNITIES: Hands-on participation with children; working with special needs children; creative art; outdoor & recreation activities; storytelling; clerical/administrative work; etc.
HOURS NEEDED: Monday-Friday, between 7:00am-6:00pm.
