DESCRIPTION: Fair Havens is a 300-bed nursing home for the frail
elderly, in a historic hotel with beautiful gardens, in the small hometown
community of Miami Springs.
OPPORTUNITIES: Social Work: resident visits, residents rights,
interviews Nursing: Transport residents, take photos for medical records
Adult Ed.: teach a class on teacher holidays; involve residents in class
activities, ceramics, music, trivia, and Bingo! Dietary: assist Dietician
Rec. Therapy/Activities: Room visits, garden visits, decorate bulletin
boards, transport and involve in classes. Entertainment: Talent for monthly
birthday parties, music, dance, theatre, etc. Theme events: seasonal-
groups needed to provide decorations, entertainment, and support! Come
add to the fun! Octoberfest Dance: Oct 20th 2000- an evening dress-up
affair in October! (We need a band). Country Western Day: dress "cowboy"
(and we need a band) for an outdoor barbeque in February
(on a weekday)
A Bridal Fashion Show: on a weekday in June, do you have a gown? We need
brides, bridesmaids, and handsome groomsmen!
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm. Weekend hours and projects
are only available to mature students with permission from the Volunteer
Coordinator.

DESCRIPTION: FTG is an 83-acre botanical garden with one of the
world's greatest collections of tropical plants. Program areas include
education, research, conservation, and horticulture.
OPPORTUNITIES: Gardening, guiding, office, café.
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday, 8am - 3pm. Some Saturday & Sunday
opportunities are available. There is a need for volunteers to serve as
guides in our school program.
COMMENTS: Students who can complete a minimum of 30 hours of service
are welcome to apply. Some shorter-term opportunities are available. This
placement is appropriate for students interested in Botany/ecology/environmental
issues. Education majors would also benefit from serving as guides in
the school program.
