DESCRIPTION: An adult/vocational/community center that offers classes in ESOL, GED, citizenship, business technology, veterinary assisting, early childhood education, cosmetology, floral arrangement. The Saturday program is family oriented and all family members are encouraged to participate.
OPPORTUNITIES: Tutoring/teacher's assistant in ESOL I & II, classroom/teacher's assistants, ecology volunteers (help maintain facility's plant life, etc.), administrative assistance, clerical, childcare assistance, etc.
HOURS NEEDED: Varies according to your assignment. The English Center is open Monday - Thursday, 8am - 10pm; Friday from 8am - 6pm; Saturday from 9am - 3:30pm; & Sunday from 9am - 3:30pm.
COMMENTS: You must make a commitment of at least 2-3 hours a week for at least 10 weeks. Ms. Fernandez will find something meaningful for you, based on your interests and schedule.

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, 40001 State Road 9336, Homestead, FL 33034-6733.

DESCRIPTION: Our mission: "To conserve the scenery and natural and historical objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of the future generations."
OPPORTUNITIES: The types of positions vary greatly and may include: skilled and unskilled maintenance, trail trimming, biology and hydrology data collection, exotic plant removal, wildlife tracking and documenting, visitor contact on walking trails or at visitor centers and environmental education assistance.
HOURS NEEDED: The majority of volunteer positions are available from November through April, however, some are open all year. The work schedule and hours donated are decided between the volunteer and their supervisor. Most work schedules are during the day Monday through Friday, however some positions have weekend and holiday hours.
COMMENTS: Volunteers are provided with uniforms, training and often the chance to see parts of the Everglades seldom seen by others. The park does not provide a stipend or meal allowance. The summer months bring high humidity and mosquito levels that may be unbearable.
