DESCRIPTION: Provided supplementary and complimentary assistance
in a non-profit hospital setting. The facility has 513 beds offering services
in ER, critical care, nursing, diabetes, cardiovascular medicine, maternity,
and other fields.
OPPORTUNITIES: Can assist in patient care as well as administrative
areas.
HOURS NEEDED: All hours available. Minimum time commitment of 75
hours.
COMMENTS: Orientation is conducted two times per month.
THE
BARNACLE STATE HISTORIC SITE, Main Highway Coconut Grove, FL 33133

DESCRIPTION: This Florida Park Service, State Historic Site provides
resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring
natural and cultural resources.
OPPORTUNITIES: Exotic plant control, landscaping, collection management,
resource management, teaching/interpretation, and special projects related
to daily park operation.
HOURS NEEDED: Open seven days a week from 8am - 4pm.
COMMENTS: Students must commit to 40 hours per semester and 2 hours
per week. Call the park staff to schedule an appointment for training
and orientation. This site is appropriate for students interested in environmental
and cultural preservation issues.
THE BARNYARD COMMUNITY CENTER, 3870 Washington Avenue, Coconut
Grove, FL (near US1 & Grand Ave.)

DESCRIPTION: The Barnyard is a community center whose primary objective
is to help children reared in a neighborhood plagued by the consequences
of economic deprivation (crime, violence, lack of opportunity) experience
academic success. The Barnyard offers a host of enrichment activities
including an after school program, youth tutoring and mentoring, youth
development groups, cultural enrichment activities, etc. Approximately
150 children participate in these programs, most of who are in elementary
school.
0PPORTUNITIES: Help is needed in all program areas--especially
in the After School program every day from 2 - 6 pm (tutors, mentors,
recreation and activity leaders, etc).
HOURS NEEDED: Generally M - F from 2 - 6 pm with some Saturday
opportunities as well.
COMMENTS: The Barnyard is a haven for the children in the West
Grove area. It offers the chance to truly make a difference in the lives
of children who badly need individual tutoring and attention. The Barnyard
needs serious, responsible, and motivated service-learning students.
