AMERICA
READS/BUDDY READING TUTORIAL PROGRAM, Countywide opportunities with
schools and after-school programs throughout Miami-Dade County.
CONTACT: At MDCC Kendall, Rebecca Robbins or Yvette Barahona (305)
237-0859, Room G316; North, Olga Kagan or Luckson Mathieu, 237-8358 Room
1159; Wolfson, Ivan Rodriguez 237-3833, Room 1464.
DESCRIPTION: Reading is critical for success in school and life;
unfortunately 40% of fourth graders read below grade level. With additional
support from citizens of all walks of life--teachers, parents, business
people, seniors and students, children who are behind in their reading
skills can improve their chances for success in school. America Reads
is a challenge from the President of the United States to all Americans
to help children read at grade level by the end of third grade.
0PPORTUNITIES: Tutors are needed to work with children in grades
K-3. Tutoring is done one-on-one in 30-minute increments. There are two
programs available: 1) Buddy Reading requires a two-hour training and
offers more flexibility in scheduling and placement sites. 2) America
Reads requires a four-hour training and a commitment of at least one hour,
two days per week. These tutors would commit to working with the same
child twice a week for a half an hour. An excellent choice for education
majors! Please contact our office for further information. Each program
has opportunities in school sites throughout Miami-Dade County.
HOURS NEEDED: Tutors are needed during the school day, Monday-Friday
from 8:00am-3:00pm; and in after-school programs from 2:00pm-6pm.
COMMENTS: If you enjoy working with children and want to help a
child learn to read, please contact our office ASAP! We will assist you
in signing up for an orientation/training and help you locate a placement
site near you.
