ALL-ABOARD

DESCRIPTION: The All-Aboard Tutoring/Mentoring program is an early
intervention educational program designed to improve the academic performance
of at-risk children in order to prevent failure in Kindergarten and First
Grade. All-Aboard has the ability to place volunteers in any Miami Dade
County Public Elementary School. All-Aboard is a collaborative effort
between The Children Psychiatric Center and Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are trained to utilize the All-Aboard
Picture Alphabet Book and Accelerated Reader to motivate their tutee and
increase academic success.
ADITIONAL OPPORTUNITY: Story hour at Homeless Assistance Center.
Read stories, lead activities for pre-k to 2nd grade children residing
at Miami and Homestead. Hour: 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month.
HOURS NEEDED: Volunteers tutor/mentor during regular school hours (8:30
a.m. - 3:00 p.m.), after school (3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday),
and during summer school sessions. Volunteers are asked to commit to twenty-four
(24) hours (1 to 2 hours per week).
TRAINING: Volunteers are required to complete a two-hour training
session. Training sessions are offered at the main All-Aboard office (15490
NW 7th Avenue) and at M-DCC.

AMERICA
COUNTS TUTORIAL PROGRAM, Countywide opportunities with schools and
after-school programs throughout Miami-Dade County.

DESCRIPTION: America Counts is a national initiative issued by
the Vice-President to increase school-age children's achievement in mathematics
and science. Math and science tutors are needed to help students in grades
K-8 get ready for algebra and geometry by the eighth grade. Anyone with
strong math skills and/or an interest in science is encouraged to participate.
0PPORTUNITIES: Tutoring opportunities are available at elementary
& middle schools and public libraries throughout Miami-Dade.
HOURS NEEDED: Tutors are needed in various after-school sites,
Monday-Friday from 2:00pm-6:00pm. Limited opportunities available during
the school day, Monday-Friday 8am-2:30pm and on Saturdays with the PLASMAS
enrichment program in several public libraries in Miami-Dade County.

DESCRIPTION: The American High Adult Center works with adults in
vocational classes as well as Basic Education classes.
OPPORTUNITIES: Service-learners have the opportunity to work with
Adult Basic Education (ABE) students in the areas of reading, writing,
and math. Service-learners will either work with students one to one or
in-groups. Opportunities are also available for students to work on special
events.
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Thursday, 6:30pm -9:30pm; Students are asked
to give at least two hours a week.
COMMENTS: Individuals are needed who want to make a positive difference
