physical skills and develop self-confidence, resourcefulness, ability
to get along with others, and have a daily sense of community.

be supervised by trained staff that will provide opportunities for you
to work with elementary children based upon your interests and skills.
Also, reading tutors are needed in sites to work with children using the
America Reads curriculum and Buddy Reading.

AFTER-SCHOOL
HOUSE, 6121 SW 68th Street, (4 blocks north of South Miami Hospital
just off US1)
CONTACT: Daisy Harrell, (305) 667-0555 (Fax: 305-667-5352)
DESCRIPTION: Provides one-on-one tutoring for elementary &
middle school children to build self-confidence in their academic ability.
OPPORTUNITIES: Spend one to three hours a week (or more!) working
with one child. Serve as a role model and friend, assist with homework,
playing games, reading, etc. (These kids love M-DCC students!)
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday, 2:30 - 7:30 p.m. Program runs in
hour shifts.
ORIENTATION: Contact Daisy for the current training schedule.
COMMENTS: Minimum commitment is one hour a week. Volunteers are
assigned one child per shift from the lengthy waiting list. Your assigned
child depends on you to show up each week at your scheduled time! Therefore,
you must make a commitment and stick to it! Many more children want to
participate in the program but can't due to the lack of volunteer tutors.
Call the After-School House to sign up, & bring a friend too!
