DESCRIPTION: Laura Saunders Elementary is one of a handful of "full
service schools" in Miami-Dade County. Volunteers, tutors, and assistants
are needed in all areas. Our school is an easy (no traffic) drive south
to Homestead! We have a large number of migrant farm-worker students who
are in great need of tutoring services. Many of our students need a mentor
who can listen, teach and play with them. We are eager to have service-learning
students who can change the way a student reads and sees his/her world
at this dynamic school-tailored to your skills, interest, and background.
HOURS NEEDED: Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
COMMENTS: Many types of volunteer opportunities are available such as
reading tutors, math tutors, bi-lingual opportunities, English and Spanish,
classroom experience Pre-K -5TH graders, one-on-one mentorship programs
and much more. It's a brand new, beautiful school, located in a rural
setting. Students have had great experiences here and recommend it highly!
LEISURE ACCESS SERVICES/MIAMI-DADE PARKS, Opportunities at parks

DESCRIPTION: On-going programs in numerous parks all over Dade County.
Leisure Access Services provides recreation, social and sport activities
to children and adults with a variety of disabilities.
0PPORTUNITIES: Serve as a guide for persons with visual impairments during
fitness programs, assist participant during water exercise classes, and
help set-up special events such as Sports Access Day. Assistance is needed
for fishing and social outings for people with head injuries or strokes,
and for people with learning and emotional disabilities. We need assistance
with seniors' programs as well as with playing games, doing arts and crafts
and a variety of other recreational programs for children and adults with
developmental disabilities.
HOURS NEEDED: Very flexible! 7:30am - 10:00pm, Seven days per week. A
minimum commitment of 10 hours is required!
COMMENTS: Orientation and training will take place the first Monday of
each month at varies times. Supervisors will orient according to program
goals and objectives. Ms. Simpson will place you at a park and program
convenient to your schedule and interests. Excellent opportunity for those
majoring in Psychology, Social Work, Recreation, Geriatrics, Special Education,
Sports Medicine, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech
Therapy and Recreational Therapy.
