CONTACT: Myra Ortega, Program Manager, (305) 751-9200 ext. 26 (Fax: 305-751-9244)
DESCRIPTION: This program aims to educate and inspire young people (grades
K-12) to stay in school, learn about careers and the world of work, and
teach basic business/work skills such as how to complete a job application.
Hands-on classroom lessons highlight business and personal economic issues
while emphasizing the message to stay in school.
OPPORTUNITIES: Junior Achievement has a structured and carefully planned
five-lesson curriculum for each grade level. After attending a 2-hour
orientation/training, volunteers will be given workbooks and lesson plans.
Mr. Ortega will place you in a school and grade level that is convenient
for you. Volunteers must agree to work with two elementary school classes
(kindergarten through 6th grade), visiting each class 5 times for 30-40
minutes per visit. Each time you visit the class you will teach one of
the lessons. This program requires a commitment of 15-20 hours over the
course of the term (training session, prep time, and 10 classroom visits).
HOURS NEEDED: Monday - Friday during school hours (8:00am - 3:30pm).
COMMENTS: This is a great opportunity to improve your communication and
presentation skills, as well as work closely with children in a meaningful
way. Ms. Ortega will provide you with a thorough orientation so you'll
be well prepared to teach the lessons. This is an excellent opportunity
for anyone interested in business and/or teaching.
