AFTJ Tidings(#36)

  • Plan for AFTJ’s Fall Meeting on Oct. 14-16, 2004 in Orlando in conjunction with the Florida Foreign Language Association. AFTJ will present two workshops: Language Review Using Online Activities by William Collazo, and Teaching With Recent Technology by a lecturer from the Japan Foundation Language Center in Los Angeles.
  • Members and their guests will enjoy lunch at Hanamizuki on Oct. 15 th at 1 p.m.
  • Information regarding the upcoming Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
  • Gold Coast 4th Immersion Day is set for Nov. 5, 2004 (Contact Marci Muench).
  • Miami and Kagoshima Sister Cities Students Exchange program was a success.

AFTJ Tidings(#35) - May, 2004

  • Report of the AFTJ 9th Annual Meeting on May 1, 2004, in Miami is summarized in the attached 3-page minutes. Juan Carlos Morales was selected as the nominee for FFLA and NCJLT Teachers of the Year, 2004, from AFTJ.
  • Reports of 4th Annual Florida Japan Bowl on March 6th and National Competition of Japanese Language and Culture in Washington, DC on April 4.
  • A detailed report of the YYY Florida State Speech Contest listing all the winners and their schools in each category and level.
  • News about the AFTJ members, including summer sojourns abroad by some.

AFTJ Tidings(#34)

  • The 4th annual Florida Japan Bowl will be held in Miami at FIU Tamiami campus on March 6, 2004. (Reported by Juan Carlos Morales jcmora2@aol.com)
  • Wai Wai Wai Florida State Speech Contest will be held in the morning on the same day as the Japan Bowl. (Reported by Takako Matsui Berlin wmatsui@gate.net)
  • Plan for AFTJ's 9th Annual Meeting on May 1, 2004 (Saturday), at the Japanese Consulate in Miami. There will be a business meeting and a professional workshop.

 What is AFTJ? 

AFTJ is a registered not-for-profit educational organization devoted to the study and teaching of Japanese language and culture. Our purpose is to encourage, support, sustain, and improve the teaching of Japanese at all levels of instruction in Florida, and to promote a cooperative spirit through the exchange of ideas and cordial fellowship among its members as well as to serve the community interests.

 AFTJ´s Activities 

Since its incorporation in 1996, AFTJ has been holding annual and fall meetings where we present many workshops, and publishing its quarterly newsletter, the "AFTJ Tidings", for the members and communities.
AFTJ sponsors two annual contests: "Japan Bowl" and "Japanese Speech Contest". We hold two annual "Cultural Immersion Day" for secondary school students, one in the Gold Coast and another in the Sun Coast regions.
Our outreach project "Traveling Suitcase from Japan" has been utilized and appreciated by many teachers and students in Florida.

 How to Become a Member? 

AFTJ welcomes anyone interested in promoting Japanese language and culture. Our current membership dues are as follows: (Dues cover for September to August)

• Annual REGULAR membership = $20.00
• Annual SUPPORTER membership = $10.00
• Annual STUDENT membership = $5.00
