FIU-UMEB students and a mentor in Bocas del Toro, Panama

The learning experience:

Students who joined the UMEB program have been able to develop their careers in the fields of environmental biology research, education, and management. Through the development of their careers these students should have a positive impact in the future conservation and management of the fragile environments of the Caribbean Basin. We offered a mentoring, teaching and student research program that covered four themes based on the environmental biology of the Caribbean: (1) Marine biology and environments, (2) Environmental biology of terrestrial ecosystems, (3) Biodiversity and conservation, and (4) Paleoenvironments and geologic history.

The mentoring experience:

Research, educational and academic guidance - Each student had an individual mentor who guided him/her during the two years of the program. Mentors provided research and academic guidance to the students, and encouraged them to participate in community activities, network with UMEB students from other universities, and develop the FIU-UMEB Society for the students and FIU UMEB alumni.

FIU-UMEB mentor prepared students for the next day experience in the field. Smithsonian Research Station Lab in Bocas del Toro, Panama.
