ENVIRONMENT
1) CAPE FLORIDA RESTORATION PROJECT,
The main objective of The Cape Florida Restoration Project is to restore
Cape Florida, on the tip of Key Biscayne, which was fortuitously leveled
by Hurricane Andrew and provided a unique opportunity to delete the exotic
plants which had over-run the park and restore the area to its natural ecological
condition.

SCHEDULE: Volunteers can work on exotic removal, seven days a weeks, however
Saturdays and Sundays are the main volunteer days from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
COMMENTS: Students have consistently enjoyed their experiences at Cape Florida.
Wear light-colored, comfortable, outdoor work clothes, a hat and sunscreen
are also a good idea.
2) METRO-DADE NATURAL AREAS MANAGEMENT
Help protect and preserve Dade's natural resources by volunteering to remove
exotic plants, planting native species, and working to beautify Dade's natural
areas.

The Kampong is a botanical garden and the former home of Dr. David Fairchild.

COMMENTS: It is suggested that volunteers wear comfortable, long pants,
hats, and shirts. Directions: Take US 1 to Douglas Rd. and turn EAST, past
Grant Ave., and, 100 yards after Main Hwy., is the entrance to the Kampong
(on the bayside).
4) THE MONTGOMERY FOUNDATION, 11901 Old Cutler Road, Miami
The Montgomery Foundation is a center for plant research which specializes
in endangered plant species, Palms, and Cycads.

COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT
1) HOMESTEAD HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, Jordan Commons site:
248th Street, on east side of US 1. Jordan Commons is an model ecological
community, the first low-income, single-family housing community geared
toward protecting the environment and energy conservation.

2) HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GREATER MIAMI

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami is dedicated to eliminating poverty
housing in Dade County by providing low-income families the opportunity
to purchase affordable housing.
SCHEDULE: Mon.-Sat., 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. (weather permitting)
COMMENTS: Volunteers need not have any experience in home construction.
ALL students, regardless of their size, ability, or strength, can fully
participate in the all volunteer effort to build affordable housing for
the poor. Habitat is currently building 95 homes in the South Miami Heights/Goulds
area. We've placed hundreds of volunteers with Habitat and every one has
come away knowing more about the community, themselves, and even construction.

SCHEDULE: The Metro Zoo Tree Bank- 30,000 seedlings are to be distributed
to the community next year and volunteers are needed once a month for a
water and weeding workday.
ESOL / ADULT EDUCATION

The main objective of the Adult Basic Ed. Prog. at Lindsey Hopkins is to
raise the literacy levels of its students.
SCHEDULE: (1) Volunteers can assist in the "Literacy Lab" and
work with recent immigrants (mostly Haitian and Hispanic) on basic English
skills. Lab is open from 8:15 to 11:00 AM and from 12:00 to 2:45 PM, evening
classes are also available from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. (2) Assist in the Math
lab, same hours.
COMMENTS: Students have consistently enjoyed their experiences at Lindsey
Hopkins. The teachers give plenty of support and the students are very grateful
for individual attention. Training is on-the-job.
2) THE ENGLISH CENTER, 3501 S.W. 28th Street, Miami

SCHEDULE: Volunteers help provide ESOL and GED and basic skills math and
English assistance to the more than 6000 students of The English Center
anytime Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.
to 12 p.m.
and 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.
COMMENTS: A wonderful opportunity to practice your teaching skills and learn
about the rewards of teaching and working with adults. Weekend hours are
very convenient for students who work during the week!
TUTORING
1) JUVENILE JUSTICE CENTER SCHOOL, 3300 N.W. 27th Ave.,

The school at Dade's juvenile detention center needs volunteer tutors to
work with teens who are incarcerated. Tutors work on English, math, computer,
and social skills.
SCHEDULE: Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
COMMENTS: Previous volunteers have reported marked changes in their preconceived
ideas and stereotypes which they previously held in regards to youth crime
and inner-city youth.
2) NEW LIFE FAMILY CENTER, 3620 N.W. 1st Avenue
New Life Family Center provides housing for homeless, intact families, and/or
fathers and mothers with custody of children. They also house homeless single
females.

SCHEDULE: Volunteers can assist with the dinner service and then provide
tutoring, Monday to Friday, 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to the more than twenty
children who live at the shelter. Weekend opportunities are available from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
COMMENTS: Volunteers should call one week in advance to schedule a time.
3) AFTER-SCHOOL HOUSE, 6121 S.W 68th Street, South Miami

Provide one-on-one tutoring for elementary age school children in a disadvantaged
neighborhood.
SCHEDULE: Volunteers spend one hour per week with one child and help with
homework, playing games, reading, listening, teaching new skills, and becoming
a trusted role model. Two, one-hour session are held every school day. From
2:30-3:30 p.m., first to third graders come in, then from 3:30-4:30 p.m.,
and 4:30-5:30 the middle school kids come in.
ORIENTATION AND TRAINING: One to two hours
COMMENTS: There are always children on the waiting list. It's a great place
for kids to go to do activities of their own choiceart, crafts, games, and
computers.
4) YWCA HIALEAH YOUTH OUTREACH, 591-E. 26th Street, Hialeah

SCHEDULE: Volunteers needed to tutor in after-school program from Monday
to Friday, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Typically, there are 15-20 in need of
tutoring.
COMMENTS: Call the volunteer coordinator the day before you want to volunteer.
5) ALL-ABOARD PROGRAM, (Children's Psychiatric Center)

The All-Aboard program is a drop-out prevention program that provides individualized,
one-on-one tutoring for DCPS kindergarten and first graders deemed "at-risk."
Work one-on-one with the same child or children. Volunteers are trained
to motivate the child, increase his/her self-esteem, and bolster academics.
ORIENTATION AND TRAINING: Two hours
SCHEDULE: Volunteers work one child for a 45-minute class. Volunteers can
take on several children to in order to give more hours per week.
6) ENVIRO-COPS / ENVIRO-MENTORS, 4001 Edmund Benson Blvd.

Become an Enviro-Mentor and work with elementary school students and help
them become Enviro-Cops. Enviro-Mentors spend one hour per week teaching
kids about the environmental facts of life. A great opportunity for students
to practice their classroom presentation skills and help save the environment.
ORIENTATION AND TRAINING: 1 1/2 hours of training. Material are provided
free of charge by the Arise Foundation.
COMMENTS: Volunteers must make a commitment of at least one semester.
7) KID-CO, 3628 N.E. 1st Ct. (just behind Denny's off Biscayne Blvd &

OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers work with children 6 mths. to 18 months, 18-36
months, or three and four year-olds. This Head-Start-type program needs
volunteers to provide nurturing care, prepare arts & crafts activities,
and supervise children at play.
MIGRANT ISSUES/TUTORING
1) CENTRO CAMPESINO 35801 S.W. 186th Ave., Florida City

Centro Campesio serves low-income families and individuals, particularly
migrant and seasonal farmworkers. The goal of this organization is to help
these community residents become self-sufficient. Volunteers can tutor in
the after-school program, assist in the Self-Help Housing Program building
homes (similar to Habitat for Humanity).
OPPORTUNITIES: (1) Tutoring in the migrant labor villas; (2) The Self-Help
Housing Program; (3) Home Repairs Asst.
SCHEDULE: (1) Tutoring Program is held in two locations: 1) Centro Campesio,
3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Call in 48 hours in advance. 2) Andrew Center- middle
school kids living in migrant camps, 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Need 60 hours
notice.

(2) The Self-Help Housing Program teaches migrants home construction. Volunteers

ANIMAL CARE

Dogs, puppies, cats, kittens galore! If you like animals, this is the place
for you! This non-profit, no-kill facility provides shelter for stray animals
and prepares them for adoption.
OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers will socialize, bath, train, clean the animals.
SCHEDULE: The shelter is open seven days a week from 7AM to 5 PM.
COMMENTS: The people at Adopt-a-Pet are great and are very flexible with
volunteers schedules.

Always over-worked and under-staffed, the Humane Society needs your help!
OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers work in the animal shelter bathing, grooming,
cleaning, and exercising animals, and working with pet adoptions.

and evenings.
3) MIAMI MUSEUM OF SCIENCE, Dept. of Zoological Sciences,

OPPORTUNITIES: To assist with the care of the permanent collection of reptiles
and raptors and with the injured and orphaned wildlife with the purpose
of returning the animals to their native habitat. Specifically, volunteer
clean cages, feed animals, wash dishes, mop floors, assist staff with medical
treatments, receive animals brought in, teach environmental education, rescuing
and releasing wildlife, and many other activities.
ORIENTATION: Training is provided and varies depending upon the type of
volunteer duty. Typically, it is on-the-job for one to two weeks.
SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, primarily during the morning hours from
7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Volunteers are also needed between 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE / TUTORING

Transition provides ex-offenders with rehabilitative services such as job
assistance and referrals, and vocational training. This program's job training
and job placement has proven successful in reducing the rate of rearrests.
OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers can tutor inmates in reading and math skills.
ORIENTATION: Two hours for new volunteers as well as on the job training
by team leaders.
SCHEDULE: Mostly evening visitation hours (2-3 hours per night, generally,
6-9 p.m.) Each volunteer is assigned one evening at least twice per month,
preferably once per week. Tutoring is arranged by the volunteer coordinator
and the schedule is flexible.
COMMENTS: Students can volunteer individually or in small groups of two
or three (maximum). Great opportunity to learn about the criminal justice
field and about social problems such as substance abuse, behavior/attitude,
and homelessness.
DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED
1) COMMUNITY HABILITATION CENTER, 11450 S.W. 79th Street, Miami

OPPORTUNITIES: CHC is a wonderful, lively place dedicated to providing training
and support to mentally retarded adults to enable them to live as freely
and independently as possible. Volunteers will work with the clients in
the botanical nursery, assist on field trips, in Special Olympics training,
arts and crafts, and on Saturday outings to Bird Bowl! If you have preconceived
ideas of who and what the mentally retarded are all about, this place is
sure to change them!
SCHEDULE: Mon. to Fri., 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., assist teachers in horticulture
and art classes, also assist in lunch program. Also, Saturday, 9 a.m. to
3 p.m., assist coaches in training clients for Special Olympics, help out
in art classes and help supervise clients during the outing to Bird Bowl.

OPPORTUNITIES: ARC has several really interesting programs including a ceramics-based,
art therapy program and "Project Thrive," an early intervention
program which provides care to mentally retarded infants and children.

3) HORSES AND THE HANDICAPPED, J.D. Equestrian Center,

OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers assist handicapped children ride ponies and horses
and ensure their safety. This is a therapeutic program for the children.

COMMENTS: Program feeds soup, baloney and cheese, peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches to over 500 homeless at seven stops in Downtown. Vans and pick-ups
are always needed, as are clothes, sized 27-32 and any sized shirts, shoes
and socks, toiletries, dog and cat food (for their pets), are also needed.

needed to help prepare and distribute free meals to more than two hundred
individuals.
COMMENTS: Many volunteers are needed here! Maps are available. Client population
is predominantly migrant farmworkers.

SCHEDULE: Dinner is served Monday through Friday, 5:00 to 5:30 with free
time until 8:00 p.m.; and Weekends- Saturday and Sunday, 7-8, 12-1, 5-6
Volunteers can help serve and prepare food.
COMMENTS: Volunteers should call one week in advance to schedule a time.
New Life Family Center provides housing for homeless, intact families, and/or
fathers and mothers with custody of children. They also house homeless single
females.
5) A WOMAN'S PLACE, 227 N.E. 17th Street

OPPORTUNITIES: A day care center for homeless or near-homeless women and
families, volunteer can assist in many areas including teaching parenting
and health classes, assisting in clerical and organizational duties, mentors,
tutors, developing creative projects- a mural, arts & crafts classes,
etc. and working with a psychologist in role playing sessions with children.
SCHEDULE: Volunteers are needed Monday to Friday, 10-3 p.m. and Saturdays
1:30-5:00 p.m.
ELDERLY
1) FAIR HAVENS CENTER, 201 Curtiss Parkway, Miami Springs

Provide care and support to the elderly. This nursing home and rehabilitation
center has many great opportunities for caring individuals to serve the
elderly.
ORIENTATION: One hour
OPPORTUNITIES: (1) Assist filling out menus- go over choices; (2) Assist
in feeding programs- several setting available:
individuals, small groups, or a congregate population.
SCHEDULE: Lunch, 11:45-1:00 p.m., Dinner, 4:45 p.m.- 5:45 p.m.
2) CLARIDGE HOUSE NURSING HOME, 13900 N.E. 3rd Court, North Miami

This 250-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation center, has extensive activity
programs, an Alzheimer's unit, and in-patient therapy.
OPPORTUNITIES: Assist in feeding program.
SCHEDULE: Volunteers are needed seven days a week during the following hours:
Breakfast, 7:15 to 9:30 a.m., Lunch, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Dinner, 4:00
p.m. to 6 :45 p.m.

BROWARD SITES

OPPORTUNITIES: Assist in the food service line.
SCHEDULE: Meals are served from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday through Friday.
COMMENTS: Volunteers need to be on-site at 8:30, and leave at 11:30 a.m.
Volunteers are asked to commit to a specific day for a specfic time period.
However, they are flexible. Clients are children, indigent residents, homeless,
elderly, and other needy. Office hours are: Mon.-Thurs, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
