| 1 January 1943: Struck by submarine U.73 torpedo off Cape Falcon, 3 miles from Oran, Algeria, while carrying munitions and explosives from New York to Oran. The ship exploded and disintegrated from No.5 hatch to bow, with flames and debris rising more than 1,000 feet into the air. After the explosion only a small part of the stern remained afloat, and this sank in less than a minute. (Source: Sawyer and Mitchell, p. 34). |
