Spring 2009

ECO 2023 - Principles of Microeconomics
Peter Thompson

This semester's course will be substantially different from the course I have taught over the last few years. I have decided this year to try using a textbook, and to combine this with Aplia's online course software.

Text

Krugman, Paul , and Robin Wells (2008): Microeconomics, 2nd edition.

An electronic version is available along with your registration to Aplia (see below) for a total of $70.The following supplementary text will often be useful to you, as I will frequently use examples from it:

Thompson, Peter (2008): Principles of Microeconomics. Manuscript, Florida International University.

Aplia

Aplia is where you will go to do homework - every week! It can be checked out at http://www.aplia.com/. There is a registration fee (you will need to get instructions and the course code from here), but you will also be able to buy an online version of the text at a reduced price. Register promptly, as the first homework is due at the end of the first week.

Registration instructions for section ECO 2023-U02 (9:00-9:50, MWF) here.

Registration instructions for section ECO 2023-U03 (10:00-10:50, MWF) here.

Course Requirements and Grading:

Scores on three exams will determine 75% of the grade in this course (the last exam will be during exam week). The mid-terms are each worth 20 percent; the final is worth 35 percent. Scores on homework done through Aplia will determine the other 25% of the course grade.

Each mid-term  will consist of 10-15 multiple choice questions, and a couple of essay/analysis questions.  The final exam will be similar in structure, but longer. At the end of the semester, grades will be assigned on a curve based on the total number of points earned on the three exams and the homework, properly weighted.  There will be no extra credits available.
