There has been a theatre program at FIU since 1972 when the university opened its doors.  This program was part of the Department of Fine Arts.  In 1981 Theatre separated from Fine Arts to become a department in its own right.  The program moved into the Wertheim Performing Arts Center in Fall 1996.  FIU THEATRE received full accreditation by NAST (National Association of Schools of Theatre) in 1998.
