Degree Programs

FIU Theatre offers two degrees: the BA--a liberal arts program of study focusing on the theatre--and the BFA for those students who wish to pursue a professional career as an artist.

Bachelor of Arts

The BA program is built around a foundational curriculum designed to provide a broad understanding of every aspect of theatre.  This foundational curriculum includes Introduction to Theatre for Majors; Acting I, 2, 3; Theatre Movement I and Theatre Voice and Speech I; Theatre History I & II; Dramatic Literature; Playscript Analysis; Intro to Scenic and Lighting Design; Stage Costuming: Makeup: Stagecraft; Technical Theatre Labs I, II, III, IV; Stage and Theatre Management, and Senior Thesis.  In addition, students must take 12 credits of theatre electives.

For students interested in acting and directing there are additional courses in acting, voice, directing.  For students interested in design, technical theatre, or stage management there are additional courses in available in Design and Technical Theatre.  There are also classes in Playwriting.  The BA is suggested for those who plan to teach high school, those who have a double major, or those who seek a broad liberal arts education.

Students in the BA program may opt to apply for the BFA program after completing the foundational curriculum.

Bachelor of Fine Arts

The BFA is suggested for students who plan to go on to graduate school for advanced degrees and who wish to work as professional actors, directors, designers, technical directors, or playwrights or who plan to go on to get advanced degrees to teach on the college or university level. The BFA program provides more specialized opportunities in performance or design.

BFA students are required to take the same foundational curriculum as BA students.  In addition, performance and design students take classes that are only open to BFA candidates.

Performance students take Acting 5, 6, 7, 8; Theatre Voice and Movement III & IV; Special Topics in Theatre Performance and Senior Projects are open only to BFA Theatre majors.  Students in the BFA Performance concentration are also required to take Playwriting, Directing, as well as courses in Dance and Music. For the BFA Performance Majors the Senior Project offers an exciting opportunity for acting students to write, stage, and perform in a play about a contemporary or historical person.

Students in the BFA Design program may specialize and select concentrations in Costumes, Lighting, or Scenic Design.  Each BFA Design Major gets the opportunity to design a major project in his or her area of specialization.
