Department Overview

FIU THEATRE offers a comprehensive education in theatre performance, design and administration.  Students are drawn to FIU THEATRE for many reasons, including the following:

  • Mentoring
Our professors work closely with students as individuals to develop their unique
    artistic voices

  • Practical Training/Academic Instruction
Our program balances practical instruction in theatre arts with academic understanding of the history and theory of the art form

  • Enriched Curriculum
Students may concentrate on one specialization in theatre but enrich their potential by taking classes in other theatre disciplines

  • Faculty
Our faculty is experienced in a wide range of theatrical techniques and brings this knowledge to the classroom.  They continue to work in professional theatre and connect students to a theatre network extending across the country

  • Cultural Diversity
Our students and faculty come from a range of disciplines and cultures

Our program offers a wide range of courses taught by varied, well-qualified faculty yet still gives every student personal attention.

PRODUCTIONS

Actual production and performance experience is an essential part of a sound theatre education.  There is ample opportunity for roles and key production assignments on the four faculty-directed Mainstage productions per year.

  • Plays are selected to offer students the opportunity to work with a wide range of styles and periods, from contemporary to classical, straight drama, and musicals.

  • Every student designer will design a Mainstage production before graduating.

  • Students can direct productions in the student Lab Theatre, New Plays Festival and the Alternative Summer Theatre Festival.

In addition there are also public performances for course-related projects.

Our theatre program regards its productions as an essential teaching laboratory for students and a source of meaningful entertainment for our community.

FACILITIES

The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center is the home of FIU THEATRE.   It includes a beautiful 220-seat proscenium theatre with a full orchestra pit and a large 150 seat black-box studio theatre. The facility is supported by a large scene shop, costume shop and dressing rooms. Both theatres have the latest in lighting, sound and other technical equipment.
