Admission Requirements and Placement

Students interested in dance as a major area of study must meet all FIU admission requirements. FIU students with less than 60 semester credits declare dance as an Intended Major. PLEASE see Registrar to declare dance as your Intended major . Those who have successfully completed 60 hours of college credit (Including FIU's University Core Curriculum and CLAST requirements), and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA are eligible to declare dance (CODE # 1801) as their major.

To declare dance as your major at FIU, it is necessary to take and pass an audition class. On-going classification as a dance major is dependent on maintaining passing grades in all major classes (C or better) and fulfilling department/university requirements (see below). Auditioning students are reviewed for their skills in ballet, modern and African based dance techniques. An observed intermediate skill potential in one of these three techniques is necessary for recommendation into the major program. Acceptance into - and ongoing status with - the dance major is dependent on progress within both university and dance program curricula, acceptable GPA, and appropriate progress in dance major studies Remember A grade of ‘C' or higher is necessary in all dance major courses.

Maintenance of Dance Major Status & Cause for Dismissal

ALL dance majors are admitted into the program with Probationary Status. Newly declared major students are expected to demonstrate improvement in their technical work within 2 consecutive semesters. If, after 2 semesters faculty determines a student has not improved in her/his technical skills, the student may be asked to withdraw from the major program. If a student does NOT maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in dance major courses, she/he may be asked to withdraw from the major program. A student may also be dropped from the dance major for non-compliance with department regulations, university rules, or negative evaluation from dance program faculty. Such decisions are not made lightly, and just cause must be present for a student to be dropped from the dance major program. If a student is not recommended to continue as a dance major, she/he may appeal this decision by arranging for a conference with the Chair to present her/his case. The Chair's subsequent decision will be made in consultation with the faculty and is final. Written correspondence regarding reasons for dismissal from the dance major will be sent to the students address on file. Being removed from dance major status does not affect your status as a student at FIU.
