Department Overview

The Dance Department is part of the School of Theater , Dance and Speech, within the College of Arts and Architecture.

Degree Awarded: BA (Bachelor of Arts) in Dance. 120 college credits are required for the degree.

IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN ADVISED IN THE DANCE PRIOR TO COMPLETING THE CLAST, YOU SHOULD NOT EXPECT TO GRADUATE IN 4 SEMESTERS.

Dance Audition

Scheduled each Fall and Spring, the audition is generally 2.5 hours long. The audition consists of a ballet barre warm-up, modern dance center floor combinations, and African dance across the floor movement sequences. Students must demonstrate an intermediate level of preparation in at least one of the three techniques. Students must submit a writing sample (a 2-3 paper or essay written for another class will be fine). The audition culminates in students solving a creative problem in movement, followed by a question and answer period with program faculty. Letters of acceptance or denial are usually sent to students within 10 business days. Some students denied acceptance for a given semester, may be encouraged to bring their technical skills up to par and audition again at a future date.

POLICIES FOR ADVISING

•  Starting in fall 2007, University policy is for students to plan and register for the entire academic year (fall/spring). Contact hours for dance studio classes (DAA classes) at 2,3 and 4OOO levels have increased. Be sure to discuss the new class schedule and time periods with your advisor.
• Advising is done for Fall and Spring Semesters ONLY: For Initial Entrance, and Fall Semester advising, your appointment will be scheduled before classes begin in August.
• APPOINTMENTS FOR FALL 2007 ADVISING FOR NEW and RETURNING STUDENTS MAY BE MADE AFTER JULY 31S, 2007. CALL 305.348.0511
• For Spring Semester courses, your appointment will be scheduled in November. THERE IS NO REGULARLY SCHEDULED ADVISING FOR SUMMER SESSIONS.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is very important that you schedule a meeting with the appropriate major advisor at the beginning of each the academic year – and IF NECESSARY – before each semester, prior to registration . At your advising session major courses are selected which will provide appropriate preparation for advanced study. An appropriate course schedule will be designed, taking into consideration academic programming, major course offerings, your area of interest and long-range goals. Advising sessions provide opportunities for the academic advisor and major student to discuss career goals and other issues that may be of concern to the student.

NEW transfer students are required to bring the most recent copy of their transcript and college catalogues from any colleges previously attended.

Dance majors must enroll in a dance technique class each term. Dance technique classes are offered at the beginning, intermediate and intermediate/advanced levels (courses are listed as 2000, 3000, and 4000 level respectively). Dependent on progress in major studies, in-coming student evaluation or other factors, students may be advised to repeat technique credits, or in some cases, repeat technique cases at a lower level. Such courses may or may not count toward your degree . The learning and practice of dance technique places great demands on the body. Technique class placement is an important consideration with regards to combining safe and proper development of physical skills and neuromuscular development AND satisfying a student's desire to move up quickly. Faculty recommendation to repeat technique sections is made with your proper development and safety in mind.
