Evaluation of Community Oriented-Policing Demonstration Center Grant by the Miami Police Department whereby they plan to link their 12 NET centers into computerized crime mapping.  The evaluation of this effort involves surveying citizen and police perceptions of attitudes towards public safety and fear of crime as well as measuring alterations in the problem solving abilities of police officers in three selected NET areas. (May, 1998 - present).

 

1998 - 1999

Evaluation of Partnership and Problem Solving Project in Coconut Grove, Florida by the Miami Police Department.  The object of this project is to alter 6 “drug corners” using CPTED principles and evaluate the changes in usage and perceptions of public safety and fear of crime prior to and after these alterations (December, 1998 - present).

Evaluation of Broward County’s Boot Camp. This evaluation will examine Boot Camp participants from 1994-1997 with the intent of establishing baseline information about Boot Camp participants, their successes and failures. I did the data management and analysis (May, 1998 - February, 1999).

 Evaluation of Florida’s Law Enforcement and Correction’s Certification Examination. This research examined the results of Florida’s newly created State Certification Examination.  Using TABE scores, socio-demographic, and geographic variables, as well as a content analysis of test items, an evaluation of the successful completion of this examination among correction and law enforcement candidates was undertaken (May-December, 1994).

1990 - 1991

“Project Second Chance”. Broward Sheriff's Office. Subcontract through the State of Florida, Department of Community Affairs, Bureau of Public Safety Management (sub-grant for Anti-Drug Abuse Act Funds). Evaluation of first time drug offenders (November, 1990-September 30, 1992). Original design included evaluation of four groups of first-time drug offenders selected for diversion into treatment programs. The research design includes examining persons receiving treatment and drug testing, treatment alone, drug testing alone, and a control group. Design could not be implemented because of program development difficulties.

 

1989 - 1990

 “Prison Utilization Project”. Florida Legislature,. Developed risk assessment instrument for state prison inmates (July, 1989). Development of a risk assessment scale for the State of Florida. A 1987 split-sample of prison releasees was used for the construction and validation of the scale using Department of Corrections and Department of Law Enforcement data. This work was done in conjunction with the universities of Florida, Central Florida, and South Florida. Part of this research effort involved the completion of 1,000 surveys across the state of new prison admissions against which the 1987 sample was compared.

 

1989 - 1990

“South Florida Auto Theft Project”. South Florida Alliance to Combat Theft in Our Neighborhoods (Action Committee,. Analysis of auto theft in South Florida. Examined current data from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, public documents, and interviews from agencies and existing groups within Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

 

1988 - 1989

“Project CRADLE” (Drug Enforcement Demonstration Project Evaluation), Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, Broward Sheriffs Office,. Subcontract through the State of Florida, Department of Community Affairs, Bureau of Public Safety Management (sub-grant for Anti-Drug Abuse Act Funds). Evaluation of enforcement of Florida's 1,000 foot law for schools (October, 1988). Pre- and Post-victimization and Neighborhood Safety surveys in neighborhood around Dillard High School in Broward County as part of Broward's Drug Enforcement Demonstration Project. The research entailed collecting base line data followed by a second survey six months later to measure the impact of increased law enforcement efforts within 1,000 feet of the Dillard High School.

“Opa Locka Ali Baba Safe Neighborhood Improvement District Project”. City of Opa Locka.  Victimization and Neighborhood Safety surveys within the Ali Baba Safe Neighborhood Triangle Improvement District of the City of Opa Locka, a high crime area, (December).

“Opa Locka Technical Assistance Planning Application Grant”. Subcontract through the Bureau of Local Planning, Department of Community Affairs, Safe neighborhood Program, Tallahassee, Florida (September, 1988). Provided technical assistance to all aspects of Opa Locka's CPTED efforts.

“Forecasting the Impact of Immigration on the Provision of Municipal Services in Dade County.” Institute of Government Star Grant, written with Steve Loveless, Dolores Brosnan, Ray Surette (July).

Evaluation of the Miami Police Department's Crime and the Elderly Unit. This evaluation involved an assessment of the impact of this unit's development and efforts upon perceptions of crime and neighborhood safety. A sample of elderly persons living in Miami's 34 high-rise (HUD) apartment complexes patrolled by this police unit as well as in-depth interviews with C.A.T.E..officers and administrators were conducted. Done in conjunction with the Southeast Florida Center on Aging (March - April).

 

1984

Stress in the Allied Health Fields (with Juanita Pursel). Examination of stress perceptions among health professionals compared to other occupational groups, employing current literature from professional journals.

 

1982

Evaluation of Video Recording Misdemeanor Arraignments, Miami, Florida (with Ray Surette). Surveys were conducted of inmates arraigned through the use of a closed circuit video system in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of South Florida. Surveys focused upon their perceptions of this method of arraignment and its fairness.

 

1979 - 1980

Participant observer of a municipal police department special operations unit. Over a six month period, rode around with a anti-robbery tactical police unit from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. each day in order to observe their operations.

 

1979 - 1982

Career goals and occupational socialization of criminal justice students. A five year study of students from the criminal justice program at the University of Florida. Students were tracked from their junior year into their first two years after graduation. Three surveys were administered.

 

1974

Participant observer of a county sheriff's office. Observed the operations of homicide units within the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

 

1970 - 1972       

Designed an open-ended questionnaire, interviewed 80% of  the respondents, and supervised the other interviews for my dissertation research.
