TIRES EXCHANGE PROGRAM

The social and political consequences of international migration constitute one of the most important contemporary issues facing the United States, EU member countries, and many other areas in the world.

TIRES stands for Transnationalism, International migration, Race, Ethnocentrism and the State, the name of a new exchange and training program. Starting in fall 2001, students have an exciting opportunity to receive a MOBILITY GRANT to study abroad for a full year on TIRES-related subjects at four European and four U.S. universities.

Participants will be expected to take a full load of courses at the host university under the guidance of a TIRES faculty mentor. Credits earned during the program will later appear as transfer credits.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
This program is open to all who are degree- seeking students, have at least upper division status during the year of exchange, and who have demonstrable interest in the program themes. Admission to the program will be on basis of selection by a TIRES faculty committee and will be contingent on the subsequent approval of the host university.

U.S. students can still apply to spend one or two semesters during the 2004-2005 academic year as an exchange student at one of the following universities:
Students applying to the program will need to demonstrate competency in the relevant language. There are stipends available for additional language training.

· Europa-Universität Viadrina, Frankfurt    (Oder), Germany
· Université de Liège, Belgium

  · Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris,  France
· Universiteit van Amsterdam,    Netherlands

whereas EC students can apply to one of the following universities:
· Florida International University, Miami
· New York University, New York
· University of Colorado, Boulder
· University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

Depending upon which university you select, courses will be taught in French, German and/or English. Students will pay regular tuition fees for the coursework abroad, and unless awarded a mobility grant, will also be responsible for their own transportation and living expenses for the program. For more information, contact your home university or for general information, contact the program coordinators at either Florida International University or Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder).
