The foraminifera will be sorted into seagrass-associated species and nonseagrass-associated species and proportions compared with the modern calibration results to infer seagrass density. The occurrence and abundance of seagrass is highly correlated with water quality in shallow, coastal areas. A seagrass history based on simultaneous analyses of seagrass proxies calibrated to present-day values is a unique approach to reconstructing paleoenvironments that should result in a chronology against which other paleoenvironmental results can be compared.
