New Grant Awarded

Florida International University recently received a new grant in the amount of 1.2 million dollars over five years to establish an Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) Program on the Biscayne Bay Campus. The focus of the Upward Bound Math Science program at FIU is to prepare low-income, potential first-generation high school students to enter careers in biomedical science and engineering. The FIU UBMS program will provide participants a host of academic and enrichment services in mathematics and the sciences that will ensure their successful completion of high school, including a six-week residential program.  This intensive focus on math and science is to culminate in the participants’ enrollment in, retention and graduation from a postsecondary institution, particularly in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields.  This exciting program targets the following Miami high schools: North Miami , Booker T. Washington, Miami Central, Miami Northwestern, Miami Norland and Miami Carol City.

The Office of Pre-Collegiate Programs and Grants/McNair in the Division of Student Affairs offers eight pre-college programs that are funded through federal, state, foundation and partnership funds and the pre-doctoral McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program. The four federal programs at FIU that fall under the TRIO initiative are the McNair program, Upward Bound Math-Science, Upward Bound (regular), and Educational Talent Search.  The office also administers the College Reach Out Program, a state funded project in a consortium with Miami Dade Community College, and the Partners in Progress program, a collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools collaborates. The foundation funded initiatives run through the office are the Center of Excellence, with its National Achiever Society, and the College Board SAT and Math and Science programs. The recruiting priority for the eight pre-college programs is to involve and collaborate with low-performing schools and schools who serve free and reduced lunch students.
