The Disability Resource Center recently sponsored FIU’s first Florida Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Event on November 14th. As part of a state-wide initiative, the event was intended to educate participants about the prevention of spinal cord injuries, as well as to provide information to those who live with such injuries. The event showcased the latest technology available, highlighting products designed to increase an individual's level of function and independence. Partners for the event included Shake-a-Leg Miami, Miami Dade Leisure Access Services, Jackson Memorial Therapists (OT/PT) with patients, Canine Companions, graduate students from FIU¦s Occupational Therapy Department and various vendors specializing in products related spinal cord injury.

The Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology program or "FAAST" sponsored the event. FAAST is a non-profit organization funded by the US Department of Education through the Assistive Technology Act of 2004, Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), private foundations and individuals.

The FAAST South Florida Regional Demonstration Center is located within the suite of the Disability Resource Center in Graham Center 190. The Disability Resource Center has been awarded this grant-funded initiative since 2004.   Through this project, the FAAST staff provide services and training to FIU students with disabilities and the community at large, in an effort in increase information and a working knowledge of assistive technology.
