Summer of Service 2009 Benefits Little Haiti

The Summer of Service 2009 has organized by Service for Peace in partnership with The Center for Leadership & Service. The project took place June 13-22, 2009, consisting of ten days of service-learning activities to rejuvenate and develop the community of Little Haiti, Miami specifically the Yvonne Learning Center (YLC), a private not-for-profit school K -12.  There are 90 students from the Little Haiti neighborhood that thrive in this school, whereas they might not otherwise make it in the public school system.  Service for Peace is working with YLC and students from FIU to build a small student library so the students have access to books and study areas throughout the week and weekends.  University students served as team leaders to the high school participants.  The program is open to all high school students in the South Florida.
The ten-day program began with an all-day orientation and included two multi-faith field trips where the participants visited different faith venues for an interactive session, six days of working at the library site, and a graduation event at the conclusion of the ten days.
Among the planned service projects are:

  • Creating a library at the Yvonne Learning Center with a mural
  • Preparing the soil and area for the organic garden planting in the fall
  • Weeding and cleaning the grounds at YLC in preparation for landscaping
  • Extracting a dilapidated chain-link fence from the property
This will be the 7th year the program has made an impact in our community since 2003, transforming young people’s lives and the communities in which they live.
