FIU Biscayne Bay Campus is pleased to announce that Anti-Apartheid Leader Eddie Daniels will speak of his life experiences under apartheid in South Africa. Mr. Daniels will discuss his life in prison with Nelson Mandela, shedding light on race, color and politics. The event is co-sponsored by the SGA Lecture Committee, Campus Life and Orientation, International Student and Scholar Services, and Africa and African Diaspora Studies. The event is free for FIU students, faculty & staff, and the greater community.

Born in 1928, Eddie Daniels is a witness and participant in the struggle for social equality in South Africa. Eddie grew up in the District Six neighborhood of Cape Town, where he experienced firsthand the effects of apartheid. He became a leader within the Liberal Party of South Africa and the African Resistance Movement in the early 1960's, and in 1964 was imprisoned on Robben Island by South African authorities for his political involvement, where he lived alongside other South African resistance leaders like Nelson Mandela. Upon his release, he authored the memoir "There and Back Again: Robben Island, 1964-1979," an important account of the infamous political prison. Eddie brings a lifetime of firsthand experience of the struggle against apartheid and exemplifies the importance of social memory and oral history in the preservation of the human experience.
