Developing a review paper.
The editor of the series Advances in the Study of Animal Behavior once asked me to write a review paper for him on anything in animal behavior I thought was interesting. After a few false starts, I crafted a passable paper. Here are some of the outlines that led up to a working draft. The outlines should be viewed in "outline" mode (select the "Outline Layout" option in the "View" menu in Microsoft Word).

outline1.doc
My 1st attempt at outlining the review paper. It stinks, but it got some ideas out of my head and onto the page, a necessary step in writing anything.

outline2.doc
My 2nd attempt at outlining the review paper. This draft was better than the first but I decided it was too ambitious and started over.

outline3.doc
My 3rd attempt at outlining the review paper. Changed completely from the 2nd draft, this is the outline from which I wrote the actual manuscript.

final_manuscript.doc
The final manuscript (3rd draft), minus the 16 figures I produced (each worth 1000 words). The manuscript has 133 cited references. This manuscript incorporates not only the ideas in my outline, but also some suggestions for improvement made by reviewers and the editors.
