Each meeting we gather to discuss a book/ movie that is voted on by Jorkor members a month in advance. The selections do not have to be new releases- we often pick books that we read or movies we watched in our college days! The key is that the book/ movie must be of political or social relevance to women of color. This means we select books/ movies about individuals from various race, gender or nationalites. We do not have a preferece for either fiction or non- fiction; however we actively avoid selecting romance novels or tales of drama. Using this as our criteria, we have selected a wide range of books and movies to discuss when we gather together.
Below are examples of the books/movies we've selected for past gatherings. Sometimes we loved it, sometimes we hated it- usually there are mixed reviews. But the books/ movies we select are usually trigger discussions about issues affecting our own lives other women of color both in the United States and globally.
