Thinking of a New Career Option?
These days, interpretation of data is an integral part of every field. Think of government officials, engineers, scientists, businessmen, educators, social scientists, lawyers, and those in the medical sciences, all of whom must be able to collect, analyze, and interpret data in order to present intelligible information! A graduate degree in Statistics will allow you to work in any industry you wish! The master’s degree program in Statistics offers a wide variety of courses in the late afternoon and evening hours to meet the needs of both full time students and busy professionals!

Master of Science in Statistics
Admission Requirements
Application Checklist
Program Description
The Department of Statistics began offering a master′s degree program in Statistics in the fall term of 2000. Applications for admission into this program are now being accepted at FIU′s Office of Admissions. Teaching assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Applications for assistantships are made directly to the Graduate Committee of the Department of Statistics
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Master of Science in Statistics at FIU is primarily an applied statistics program, which offers a balance of statistical theory, statistical methodology, and, through electives, an area of application concentration in the fields of Biostatistics/Environmetrics or Reliability Analysis.
The program offers a thesis option and a non-thesis option. Regardless of the concentration or thesis option, the program requires a total of 36 credit hours as follows: a core of six courses (18 hrs), a concentration area of four (elective) courses (12 hrs), and either a thesis (6 hrs) or two additional elective courses (6 hrs) and a comprehensive examination.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be admitted into the program, applicants must meet the university′s graduate admission requirements and the following departmental requirements:
1. Bachelor′s degree in statistics, mathematics, or applied mathematics from an accredited university or college. A bachelor′s degree in some other discipline is also acceptable provided the applicant has a suitable mathematics background.
2. A 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale) GPA in mathematics and statistics courses.
3. Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant′s academic qualifications.
4. Approval of the departmental graduate committee.
