Spring Audition Information
Postponed Until Further Notice

Qualifications

All squad members must be selected through an official Dance Squad Audition process. The squad size ranges from 10 to 20. A selection process may be held if additional team members are needed. All squad members must tryout out each year. Student wishing to try out for the squad must:

  • Be an enrolled FIU student or in process of applying to FIU.
  • Be male or female.

The dance team supports the university's nondiscrimination policy and welcomes all FIU students to participate in the selection process. However, dancing requires a high level of physical activity and strength. If you have or have had injuries that may cause any physical limitations, you must notify the Director prior to tryouts to determine if reasonable accommodations can be made to allow you to tryout. Medical certification will be required outlining any disability and restrictions associated with your physical limitation. The Director will decide if it will prevent you from performing dance team responsibilities and disqualify you from tryouts.

Procedures

Tryouts consist of two parts: Preliminaries and Finals. Preliminaries will be held on ----------- and Finals will be held on -----------. Candidates with extraordinary circumstances or that live too far away to come in for both days may submit a video tape in lieu of attending the Preliminary Audition.

Preliminaries:
Preliminaries will start at 5:00pm on ---------------. Individuals are asked to be at the venue at 4:30pm to ensure a prompt start time. Candidates will learn a dance routine. The dance will be more hip-hop in style and may include skills such as slides, turns, etc. At the end of preliminaries each candidate will be evaluated on the dance routine for self-confidence, memory, and dance skill.

Schedule:

Review Dance Routine

At the preliminary tryouts the instruction level will be intermediate. Candidates with no prior dance experience are helped, but other candidates are not held back for the slower learner's sake. For individuals wishing to brush up on their dance skills: Many local dance teams, including FIU, offer dance clinics to help students prepare for tryouts. Call the schools in your area to get more information about any clinics they may offer.

Finals:
Finals will start at 2:00pm on January 21, 2005. Individuals are asked to be at the venue at 1:30pm to ensure a prompt start time. Candidates will be evaluated on the dance routine learned in preliminaries. Dancers are scored in rhythm, showmanship, memory, endurance, and dance technique.

Judges for the final tryout are selected from regional dance team coaches or choreographers, dance studio instructors, and former dance team members who have been off squad for at least 2 years.  High and low scores are dropped to eliminate any perceived bias.

  • Dancers are introduced individually in groups of 2 or 3.
  • Each group performs the routine, takes one minute of rest (without leaving the room).
  • After all of the candidates audition, the dancers return, individually, to perform the piece solo.  After all of the dancers have completed their solo presentations, all of the dancers are brought back into the room.  At that time, if the judges need to see anything, the dancers may be asked to perform the routine as a group.  This is the last opportunity for the judges to see the candidates all together.
  • All of the candidates exit the room.
