Barbara Thomlison, Ph.D. is a professor in the School of Social Work
and Acting Director of the Institute for Children and Families at Risk.
She obtained her Ph.D. in social work from the University of Toronto, and
has a lengthy interdisciplinary practice history with children, families,
and policy services research. Her teaching experiences involve both undergraduate
and graduate programs in other universities. Her academic interests include
child welfare, foster care, mental health, field education, program evaluation,
working with families, and evidence-based services. At the FIU School of
Social Work, she teaches courses on child welfare, child maltreatment,
and practice interventions. Her current research projects are in the area
of school readiness and kinship care. Dr. Thomlison’s publications include
articles in the areas of child welfare practice, family preservation, foster
care, treatment foster care, family reunification, and social work field
education. Dr.Thomlison is actively involved as a board and community member
in local and national child welfare and family service organizations.
