Monte H. Koppel, Professor

Dr. Koppel earned a Ph.D. in Sociology and International Economic Systems from the Graduate Faculty
New School for Social Research in New York, an M.S.S.W. in Social Work from Columbia University
ans an M.A. in Sociology from New York University. Prior to joining FIU, Dr. Koppel worked as a
Professor for the Department of State/Fulbright Lectureship Program in Iran and Venezuela. In addition,
Dr. Koppel worked as a Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico for twenty years.
During his career, Dr. Koppel has served as the Chief of Mission and Consultant on behalf of the
UNICEP/ United Nations Mission in Columbia where he developed governmental social welfare policy
and planning programs. Dr. Koppel has acted as a guest lecturer at several universities around the world,
including the University of the Andes in Columbia, the Institute of Social Studies, the Hague, Netherlands,
Bar Ilan University of Israel, and Darwin College in England. Dr. Koppel's consulting work includes
service to the National Planning Council in Iran and the White House Conference on Aging. Since 1976,
Dr. Koppel has served as a Professor of Social Work for FIU.
