L.Yvonne Bacarisse, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies

Professor Bacarisse is an Associate Professor of Social Work and the Associate Dean of Undergraduate
Studies for FIU's North Campus. After earning a masters degree in Social Work from Tulane University,
Professor Bacarisse taught at Florida State University's School of Social Work and the University of
Miami's School of Medicine. During her tenure at FIU, she has served as Chair of the Department of
Social Work, Associate Dean of the School of Public Affairs and Services and Acting Vice-President for
Academic Affairs. As a clinical social worker, Professor Bacarisse has worked with the Cuban Refugee
Assistance Program, the State of Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitive Services, Child and
Family Services, Public Health Trust (Jackson Memorial Hospital) and the Southeast Regional Drug
Training Institute. Professor Bacarisse is an expert in the field of drug use and methadone treatment and
was appointed by the Board of Dade County Commissioners to a Drug Abuse-Mental Health Planning
Council. Currently, Professor Bacarisse is Editor-in-Chief for the Organization of Latino Social Workers
newsletter, serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for Aspen Publishers, Inc. and is a member of the
National Association of Social Workers' National Presidential Advisory Commission.
