Velmarie Albertini earned an M.S.W. and M.A. in Comparative Sociology from Florida International University. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at FIU. Research area of interest : Gender and family, immigration and ethnicity.
Dissertation in progress: "The effects of length of stay in the United States and the self-concept on immigrant minorities' perception of opportunities for social mobility."
Professor Albertini is the Coordinator of Student Services for the School of Social Work. As Student Services Coordinator, Prof. Albertini actively recruits new students and provides academic and professional advising to graduate and undergraduate students. In addition to her administrative duties, Prof. Albertini teaches social work courses in the School of Social Work. Prior to joining FIU's faculty, Prof. Albertini served with the State of Florida's Department of Labor and Employment Security as a vocational consultant.
