Admission Clearance Process

According to the Florida Board of Regents Rule 6C-6.001(2) “… If determined not to be in the best interest of the University to admit an applicant because of past misconduct the university may do so.” This authorizes universities to refuse admission to applicants due to past misconduct. The University further requires the Vice President for Student Affairs or his/her designee to review all applications disclosing information regarding any prior criminal conviction or conduct problem at another institution and to make a decision as to whether the admission of this applicant will be in the best interest of the University. This statement describes the procedure and assigns responsibility for the review of these applications for admission. Applicants who fail to disclose any prior criminal conviction or conduct problem at another institution and such fact is subsequently discovered by the University are subject to denial of admission or disciplinary action.

The following section outlines the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution involvement in the Admissions Clearance Process:

When the applicant completes his/her FIU application and indicates either “yes” or neglects to check off an answer to one of the following questions, the application is placed on a “judicial hold” by the Office of Admissions.

Excerpt from the FIU application:

Failure to answer these three questions will delay processing of your application

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, you are required to provide a written explanation of the event. In addition, you may be required to furnish FIU with copies of all official documentation explaining the final disposition of the proceedings.

4. An applicant should provide as much information as possible. This information will be reviewed by an Admissions Clearance Committee, which is chaired by a member within the office Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution. The Committee will contact the applicant if additional information is required. The Committee will make a recommendation to the Office of Admissions regarding the application for admissions. The recommendation will not be disclosed to the applicant.

5. The Admission Clearance process may take several weeks to complete. The Committee meets on a weekly basis and sends recommendations to the Office of Admissions.

Please allow 2-3 weeks for the Office of Admissions to process the recommendation and make a decision regarding an offer for admission to FIU.
