What you say here stays here - with only certain exceptions.
Counseling is confidential. We believe that it is most effective if you can
be direct and honest with a staff member without fear that personal
information will be divulged. We do not release information outside
the FIU Counseling and Psychological Services Center (CPSC) without your written consent, except in situations such as those listed below. We do not
make notifications of counseling in your official FIU record and the files of the Counseling and Psychological ServicesCenter are maintained independently from those of the FIU Health Care and Wellness Center and all other FIU departments. Client records are maintained under strict security measures that are consistent with professional practices.
The laws of the State of Florida provide the following exceptions to the general policies of confidentiality:
If the therapist has knowledge of child, elder, or a person with disability abuse.
If the therapist has knowledge of intent to harm himself/herself or others.
If the therapist receives a court order to the contrary.
If the therapist or graduate student in training is supervised or consults with another clinical or counseling psychologist or mental health counselor within the center.
