Rebecca Salokar, Associate Professor (Ph.D., Syracuse University); American Government, Judicial Politics, Women and Justice, Public Policy.
Professor Salokar received her Ph.D. in political science at Syracuse University in 1988, and is currently a second-year law student at Florida International University. Her research and teaching interests have centered largely on American politics with special attention to judicial institutions. She is the author of The Solicitor General: The Politics of Law (Temple University Press, 1992) and with Mary L. Volcansek, co-edited Women in Law: A Bio-Bibliographical Sourcebook (Greenwood, 1996). In addition to her work on the solicitor general, Professor Salokar has authored articles and/or chapters on the General Counsel of the House of Representatives and Senate Legal Counsel, judicial elections and ethics, Florida's constitutional amendment processes, the Florida constitutional right to privacy, the impact of Hurricane Andrew on South Florida courts, and gay and lesbian politics.
At the undergraduate level, Professor Salokar regularly teaches American Government, Judicial Process, Constitutional Law: Limits, and Gender Justice and the Courts. Additionally, she offers a series of courses that are related to law as an agent of social and political change. For the graduate curriculum, Professor Salokar has led the American Politics Seminar and developed the Judicial Research seminar. Dr. Salokar has been the recipient of several university-wide teaching, service and advising awards during her tenure at FIU. She was also inducted into FIU's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in 2004. Professor Salokar is affiliated with the Women Studies Center and the African-New World Studies program at Florida International University, and the Center for State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University-Camden.
