Florida International University was established in Miami in 1972 and is the state's urban public research university. With over 34,000 students, FIU offers more than 100 degree programs including nearly 20 doctoral programs. It has been designated by the Carnegie Foundation as “Research I” doctoral institution and has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top urban universities in the country.
