The Curriculum
The Spanish-language M.A. program requires 36 credit hours. The structure of the track is as follows:
Required Courses (9 credits)
POS 5716 Foundations of Political Science
POS 5706 Research Methodology
POS 6976 Research Seminar (for thesis: to be taken in final semester)
Core Courses (9 credits)
Each student is required to take the following three core courses:
CPO 5091 Seminar in Comparative Politics
INR 5007 Seminar in International Politics (INR 6936 may substitute)
POT 5007 Seminar in Political Theory
Additional FLACSO Requirements (9 credits):
Contemporary South American History (3 credits), may be satisfied by:
• LAH 5905, Readings in Latin American History, or
• LAH 5935, Topics in Latin American History, or
• LAH 6906, Advanced Readings in Latin American History, or
• LAH 6915, Research in Latin American History
Modern Political Thought (3 credits), may be satisfied by
• POT 6056, Seminar in Modern Political Thought, or
• POT 6603, Political Theory of the Modern State
Contemporary Social and Political Analysis (3 credits), may be satisfied by:
• CPO 6307, Seminar in South American Politics, or
• CPO 5036, Politics of Development, or
• POT 6603, Political Theory of the Modern State
Elective Courses (9 credits)
Students are required to take three elective courses. No more than 6 credit hours may be taken outside of the Department of Political Science without permission.
