Introduction

Florida International University (FIU) and the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO, Buenos Aires, Argentina) now offer a dual degree program in Political Science on site in Miami, taught entirely in the Spanish language. The program includes the study of political theory and comparative politics, with a special focus on contemporary Latin America.

Students completing the program will receive two degrees:

1. The Master of Arts in Political Science, awarded by FIU; and

2. The Maestría en Ciencias Sociales (Ciencias Políticas y Sociología), awarded by FLACSO.

The dual degree program will equip graduates with academic credentials that are recognized in North America, Latin America, and around the world.

Why Study Political Science?

The challenge of globalization demands that professionals be prepared to understand and analyze public and international affairs. Political science gives students the analytical and theoretical tools necessary to understand the political process. The FIU-FLACSO dual degree program emphasizes the comparative study of the politics of Latin America, of the United States, and of hemispheric relations. The program is especially attractive to professionals working in public and international affairs, as well as in trade, business, and commerce. Graduates may choose to pursue careers in diplomatic service, government affairs, multinational corporations, international organizations, and the non-profit sector, among many other options. The M.A. degree is also an excellent gateway for those who will later pursue a Ph.D. in political science or allied social sciences. The quality of the FIU and FLACSO faculty guarantees students access to cutting-edge social science research in the United States and Latin America.

The dual degree nature of this program is one of its most compelling dimensions. Students receive two M.A. diplomas, one from FIU and one from FLACSO. Independently of whether the student's first language is English or Spanish, this program awards degrees in both languages, both associated with prestigious institutions in North America and Latin America. Given that the program requires an M.A. thesis, the dual degrees open doors for a future academic career on either continent.

Why Study in Miami?

As Florida's public research university located in Miami, FIU offers academic programs consistent with the city's unique hemispheric role. This is especially important as Miami moves beyond the role of “gateway to the Americas” to become the “Brussels of the Americas”—the undisputed axis of trade and financial flows, home to international organizations, and the epicenter of U.S.-Latin American relations. In partnership with FLACSO Buenos Aires, FIU recognized the need for a distinguished Spanish-language program in politics and public affairs, with the requisite emphasis on Latin America.
