Welcome to the FIU Philosophy Department’s website. We offer both a minor and a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and we also coordinate an interdisciplinary Master’s of Arts in Liberal Studies program (MALS). The department hosts a regular talk series. Check back for department news and information about upcoming colloquia and other events.

The Philosophy faculty is actively engaged in research. Their work is published in some of the highest impact journals in the field: The Journal of Philosophy, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Philosophical Quarterly, Synthese, Philosophy of Science, Ethics, Hypatia, Continental Philosophy Review, Kant-Studien and Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, among others. In recent years, our majors have been accepted to doctoral programs in Philosophy at: U.C.L.A., University of Chicago, U.C. San Diego, University of Rochester, Vanderbilt University, Purdue University, University of Miami, U.C. Riverside and the Catholic University in Louvain, among other highly regarded programs. Graduates have gone on to join Philosophy departments as faculty members at institutions including, Cornell University, Arizona State University, Hobart and William Smith College and Barry University.

Our majors have been admitted to many law programs, including those at Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Miami and the University of Virginia.

Finally, many of our majors have gone on to earn doctorates and master’s degrees in other fields such as: Engineering, Psychology, Fine Arts, Chemistry, International Relations, Political Science, Criminal Justice, History, Architecture, Religious Studies and Business, demonstrating that a background in Philosophy prepares students for success in a wide range of fields.
